When I was a kid, our fifth grade field trip was to a water park and I remember begging my mom to let me deviate from the normally mandated one piece and be able to buy/wear a two piece because I would be the only one in our class not wearing a bikini. I remember the back and forth struggle that was my argument with my mom in the weeks leading up to the trip, until finally she offered a compromise – a tankini.
Looking back on that particularly hard piece of my childhood – you know, trying to fit (blend) in and blah blah blah – I see how silly it was, especially now that I’ve grown to really like the one piece trend that’s resurfacing. A bit apprehensive at first, I bought this one piece recently for our trip to Hawaii (see the post featuring it here), but wasn’t sure how I would feel about actually being in it on the beach in public. I’m not sure when showing as much skin as you can possibly get away with became something that is just expected of women at the peach or pool, but I found it so freeing and comfortable being in something that I really didn’t have to worry about adjusting or making sure it was situated just right to avoid a wardrobe malfunction.
The one piece is easy to wear and doesn’t HAVE to be super conservative if you don’t want it to be. There are so many shapes, styles and cuts now that really tailor to any style and preference. I love the simplicity that comes with the ability to just throw on a pair of shorts over a one piece and, in most cases, not even need a top to cover-up the rest – it’s like a built in shirt.
If you ask me, I’d recommend keeping a one piece nearby this season for those days when you want to be out in the sun, but don’t want to have to worry about too many of the details. I’ve linked some of my favorite suggestions below 🙂
