I used to wash my hair every single day. Now, I wash it on Tuesdays and Fridays.
My hair is really thick, long and I have a LOT of it. My hair appointments take over 3 hours and I ALWAYS pay more for hair color because the hairdresser has to mix two batches of it. So you can imagine how old it got to wash, dry and style it every. single. day.
Why did I do it? If I didn’t wash my hair every day, it felt gross. And maybe nobody else noticed, but it would smell weird to me, feel greasy and it just made me really uncomfortable.
So how did I train my hair to need to be washed less? The first thing I had to adjust to was wearing my hair up and second was effectively using dry shampoo. For the first week or so, my routine would look like this:
Day 1: wash and style
Day 2: dry shampoo, hair up in ponytail or bun
I’m not kidding, it really took that long for me to get used to not washing everyday lol! But increasingly it became easier and soon I reached my goal of two washes a week. Now, this is what my washing routine looks like:
Day 1: wash and style (straighten or curl)
Day 2: style
Day 3: dry shampoo and style
Day 4: dry shampoo and ponytail or bun
A few tips that help me get through the week without washing:
Use as little hair product as possible
I use a moisturizing cream before blow drying, a small amount of dry shampoo when I need to and hair spray if I’m using the curling iron.
Apply dry shampoo correctly
I spray a small amount at the roots of hair and work it in with my fingers. Alternatively, if your hair is in dire need of some grease absorption, you can spray liberally and use a blow dryer and round brush to set it. This is actually a great way to create volume at your roots!
Resist the urge to touch your hair!
This can be hard because many times you’re not even thinking about it, but when you touch your hair you transfer the oils from your hands to your roots. This makes your hair seem greasier faster.
Clip your hair in a bun while you sleep.
This is a big one that I swear helps! I use these small little clips.
Washing my hair less has been so helpful. Getting ready for the day helps me feel more productive – even as a stay-at-home mom – and it’s much less of a chore when you only have to blow dry twice a week 😉
