In an effort to not only save a little bit of money during the next few months, but also to help simplify my life a bit – as well as provide myself (and hopefully you too!) a little challenge – I’ve decided to create a capsule wardrobe for this Spring and Summer. Now, in researching the best way to make a capsule, I found out one thing.. there is no right or wrong way to make your capsule. It can really be anything you want – however many pieces you want for as long or as little a time period. The benefits are endless as well. In creating my own capsule wardrobe I’ve realized that not only will this save me money in the coming weeks and months, but it will also save me time (getting ready in the morning, doing laundry, etc.) and a bunch of space! It has already simplified my life so much and I’m so excited to share it all with you!
Today, I’ll share the steps I took in putting this capsule wardrobe together, the pieces I chose and what parameters I’m using for this particular capsule.
Here are the steps:
1. Clean out Your Closet. Take everything out of your closet and drawers – and don’t forget your laundry! Pick up every piece you come across and decide whether it should be kept or tossed. Build a toss pile and a keep pile and go ahead and get the toss pile out of sight once you’ve gone through your pieces.
2. Decide What You Need. This step involves taking a look at your every day life and deciding what types of items you will need. For me, I work at an office during the day, but my work environment is fairly casual. In addition, I know that the hubs and I will be doing dinners out, BBQ’s in the backyard and get-togethers with friends on the weekends. So – for me, I need a little bit of everything. – I should probably note that I’m not including beach attire (suits and cover-ups), as well as workout attire in this capsule.
3. Decide on a Reasonable Number for You. While I was doing my capsule wardrobe research, I noticed there are a lot of capsules that focus on the number of pieces you use. I don’t think the number should be too strict. For me, I just decided that 4 of each of the following categories: weekend dresses, work dresses, work tops, weekend tops, weekend bottoms, work bottoms and outerware would be the perfect amount for what I wanted my capsule to look like. So I gathered my favorite season-appropriate pieces in each category and that was that. – I should probably note again that I didn’t throw away EVERYTHING that I’m not using in my current capsule wardrobe. I bought a clothing rack and put my capsule items there and left everything else in my regular closet.
4. Pick a Time Frame. This can look different for anyone. Luckily, I just did a stint of shopping for our recent trip to Hawaii and stocked up on just about everything I’ll need for the coming Spring/Summer months. Therefore, I’m choosing to do this capsule for the next 3 months.. 90 days.. 12 weeks. On August 1st I’ll regroup and circle back and give my thoughts on this whole capsule wardrobe thing! Maybe I’ll extend it through the full Summer season.. who knows.
In the meantime, I’ll be posting about some of the outfits that I’ve created according to the items I’ve chosen for my capsule. I think we all may be surprised at just how much you can do with just 28 pieces of clothing! Another cool thing I’ve realized about this process is that it really helps you to build a wardrobe that you love and that reflects your sense of style. As you move through building a capsule, gather inspiration from places like blogs and Pinterest and really take note of your likes and dislikes. If you find that you’re missing something or some thingS from your ideal wardrobe – research and find the perfect pieces to fill in the gap. This will help you to build a collection that you really love and that accurately reflects your own sense of style. In doing so, hopefully you will begin to feel more content with having less because what you do have are pieces that you love.
In the collage below, feel free to click on each piece. Many of them are linked to their actual webpage, but for the ones that have been sold out – I linked similar pieces that you may like. 🙂
