When I made this balloon garland for Fischer’s first birthday party earlier this month I got a ton of requests for a tutorial, so here it is! This little project really is a simple DIY – the most time consuming part is blowing up all the balloons.
step 1.
The first thing you’ll want to do is determine the space you’ll be putting your garland in and purchase your balloons. For reference, I bought one pack of 24 clear balloons and one pack of 24 white balloons. It was the perfect amount for a double doorway and a small version of the garland for the front of his highchair. If you’re unsure about how many balloons you’ll need, I’d suggest buying a big pack – they’re fairly inexpensive and come in packs of 100+!
step 2.
Blow up your balloons. They don’t need helium, just good ol’ fashion deep breaths. If you can, have someone help – it’ll save you some lightheadedness and a lot of time! As you blow them up, make balloons that are different sizes. Shoot for small, medium and large so you have a point of reference. As you blow them up and tie them off, tie a piece of string about four inches long to each one.
step 3.
Measure a piece of string (I just used white curling ribbon) to the size you’d like your garland to be – plus a foot or two so you have room to tie it on to wherever you’re putting it. Leaving about three inches of string at the end, tie a large triple knot at one end and then tape it to a surface. I taped my string to one end of our dining room table and the other end to a chair at the opposite end.
step 4.
This is the fun part. Now you start tying your balloons to the long string alternating between sizes to add dimension and interest. Double knot so that they’re tied firmly onto the string, but not too tight that you can’t slide the balloon back and forth. Once you’ve connected the balloon to the string, push it towards the end so they all fit together closely.
And that’s it! You just keep doing step 4 until you have the length of garland you’re looking for. What’d I tell ya – super simple, right?
