This time of year has the potential to be really heavy on your wallet. With the holidays coming up and the temperatures dropping outside, there can be a lot of new things to buy. However, if you go into it looking to build your fall wardrobe upon staple pieces you can wear year after year – then you can feel good about investing in the pieces you love. This time two years ago (I was REALLY pregnant last year so my wardrobe essentials looked a little different), I started investing in my Fall essentials and this year I really started to reap the benefits. When it came to shopping for upcoming cold weather, I really only needed a couple things to round out my closet and then had room left in my budget to add a few pieces to freshen things up.

So I wanted to share my fall wardrobe with you guys in case you are looking for some help or inspiration this season! Below, I’ve gone into a little bit of detail about the types of pieces i’m wearing these next few months and why I consider them fall essentials. Scroll all the way to the bottom to see photos of some of my favorite outfit options!

tops:

V-necks are essential year-round but especially for this time because they’re great for layering under jackets, coats and sweaters. I forgot to get mine out to photograph but I have the same one in four different colors: white, black, gray and marooon.

A white button-up is a must in my opinion. It goes great with blazers and sweaters, jeans, skirts and even layered over dresses. This is the one I have. It’s extremely affordable, SO soft and long enough to tie up when you want to go for that look.

To switch things up a little, I also keep a stylish athleisure option on hand for those days when you just feel like being comfy and casual.

layers:

Blazers are my absolute favorite things to wear when temps begin to drop. They look so good paired with a dark or light pair of jeans and anything from v-necks to buttons ups and even turtlenecks. I’ve had several different blazers but love these so much – which is why I have two of them!

Sweaters and cardigans ares important for layering in the fall. I’ve found that you really only need two colors of cardigans for this season: gray and camel. Mine are of the longline variety which I love because they go with both pants AND dresses. I also recommend a good slouchy pullover because it can be worn layered over so many things or worn by itself. Also,  comfortable hoodie-type sweatshirt is perfect for throwing on with leggings or jeans when you need something quick and easy to head out the door in. To add a bit of fun, I picked up this leopard cardigan too, which is inexpensive and great for either workwear or just complimenting a simple ensemble.

In terms of Jackets and coats, I’ve found that I love having four types on hand. A longline coat is great for pairing with dresses and skirts when you need more warmth than a cardigan. I’ve already talked about a jean jacket, but another jacket that I’ve recently added is this leather one. Mine has a hood and a ‘moto’ look and feel to it which I love. Finally, a peacoat is a must for wearing with jeans and just about anything else!

dresses:

Fall dresses come in a ton of different options, but I feel like the one dress you should always have at the ready is a little black one. The one I’ve linked below is my absolute favorite. I’ve had it for two years now and find that it never goes out of style. This particular one is so flattering, with a ruched midsection and a tasteful length.

I also added two new shirt dresses for this year because I wanted few more options to be able to wear to church and other casual outings. These particular ones are great because they’re nursing friendly and can be worn with so much – plus they’re really affordable! I genuinely like to wear dresses this time of year and love how they look with booties and sweaters!

bottoms:

Denim is essential year-round. A light, dark and white pair will give you endless options for outfits. Also, a denim jacket is a must.

For a little variety, I also added these two bottoms to me repertoire for this Fall. I’m excited about this skirt and think it has major potential for being worn year after year. As for the cropped flairs, I just thought they would add a little pizzaz. I love the color and the (functional) button detailing on the front! If green isn’t your thing, I’ve also linked a similar white pair that I thought were cute!

A good pair of leggings are really important. I use them for lounging around the house, running errands and even in lieu of black pants or denim. As long as the top i’m wearing covers my booty, I love wearing them as regular pants. Maybe next year I’ll invest in a great pair of black jeans, but for now these will do!

shoes:

Booties and boots are another part of a Fall wardrobe that, if you invest in quality pieces, will last you for years to come. In my opinion you should have a pair of gray and beige booties and a pair of black and brown riding boots! I also recommend a a good pair of rain boots.  I’ve linked the exact pairs that are still available and, for the others, I’ve added really similar versions!

Mules and slides are perfect easy options for Fall outfits and I highly recommend the black and cognac color variety! These are the ones I have.

Of course, these aren’t ALL the possible outfits, but they’re some of my favorite combinations with the pieces I’ve talked about above!
