Let’s real talk about playrooms for a minute.

In all honesty, I never thought my kids would have a dedicated playroom. When I used to think of a playroom, the first words that came to mind were: excessive, unnecessary and spoiled. I saw people share their playrooms online and I thought it was such a waste of space. I think maybe those feelings stemmed from just thinking we would never be able to have one.. maybe mixed with a little bit of jealousy.. maybe mixed with sheer ignorance.. but whatever the cause or reason – here I am with my foot in my mouth.

Of course, it’s not a necessity. But there’s something about becoming a parent that just makes you want to give your babies the world and then some. We were so fortunate to find this house with SO much space and room to grow as a family and ever since we were first shown it, we knew if it became ours that the second floor living area would be a playroom for Fischer and his (hopefully) future sibling(s). It’s SO nice to have a dedicated room where all of his toys, books and stuffed animals can live – especially since his room in this house has less space than his room in the last (you can see his old nursery here!). Plus, let’s be honest, toys can be a little obnoxious and unsightly, so I’m so grateful for a room where everything has its own place and can be out of sight if need be.

decor.

For decor, the only new things we bought were the rug, couch and these baskets for the bookcase. Everything else we already had and were using in his old room. The Shel Silverstein poems that are now above his couch used to be above his crib in the old house. The Oh How He Loves Us sign used to be hanging at the top of our stairs and his book ledges and toy box used to be in the nursery too. When I share Fischer’s current room you’ll understand why everything got commandeered to the playroom 😉

To give you an idea of its location, the playroom is located just outside of Fischer’s bedroom door and has a staircase leading up to G’s office on the third floor. Often times I’ll put him down for a nap and just plop down on the couch to do work or fold laundry because with its cozy rug, cute decor and comfy couch, it’s easily my favorite room in the house at the moment 🙂

Let’s talk about this couch really quick. We ordered it from IKEA and, despite the fact that it came in 3 large FLAT boxes, it’s surprisingly very comfortable! It’s also extremely functional. The chaise part of the couch opens so you can store things in it and it can be switched to either side or used as a detached ottoman! PLUS, it’s a sleeper sofa and the cushion covers are washable. Seriously the perfect playroom sofa, we’ve been so pleased with it!
