Since I last shared my nursery design ideas (click here to see the post), the plan for baby boy’s room has changed a little bit. It’s still a pretty gender neutral nursery design, but the overall theme for his room has gone in a totally different direction. Instead of botanicals or a blue alphabet/rainbow theme, we’re going with…

*drumroll please*

Bunnies!

During the first few rounds of ideas, I really liked the design boards that I came up with, but neither of them really seemed like a perfect fit for us. Those drafts were for nurseries that were a little more modern and, honestly, I couldn’t shake the craving for a nursery that felt a little more classic.

My initial idea was for the classic, original Winnie the Pooh illustrations. That was always my favorite when I was a child. But then I came across these rabbit prints and they reminded me of a very close second to my love of Pooh Bear… that being of Peter Rabbit. I knew it right away – that would be our boy’s nursery theme. Not only that, but when I ran the idea past G and showed him the prints I’d found, his response was immediately positive (a contrast to the reaction I got with the previous two designs). He immediately said, “I love that, I think it’ll be so cute!”

So, that was that. I was done searching!

The nursery design.

As far as differences from the designs in this post, most things stayed the same. What I really needed to decide was which rug would fit the space and what color curtains would work best. In the end, this is what I came up with:

I will say – I tried really hard to incorporate more color in this room, y’all. But in the end, this neutral gray rug just screamed nursery to me and I couldn’t help myself.. I had to choose cream or white curtains! I just love the way these soft neutrals pair with the richness and texture of wood accents and I plan to put some sort of live plant in there as well.

My advice for designing a nursery.

I can’t help but be reminded of the feeling I got when I finished putting Fischer’s nursery together. It was so light and airy and fresh and just adorable. I knew I would be spending a lot of time in there rocking my baby, nursing him and watching him grow, so I focused on creating a space that he and I would both really enjoy spending time in. I remember spending lots of time in there even before he was born, rocking in his rocker and just smiling while I looked around the room imagining what sort of little boy would grow up there. While deciding on the design for our second nursery, that’s exactly the feeling I was aiming to recreate.

That’s the advice I would give anyone who is designing their own nursery: create a space that feels good to you. A space you won’t mind spending a LOT of time in. A space that will make the late nights and early morning feedings more of a joy than a chore. Let’s face it, a baby’s nursery is really about the mom. They’re not going to care about what their room looks like for years 😉 It’s true! So, design it for you, mama – you’ve earned it.

The progress so far.

I’ve already ordered the prints, along with frames and both his rocker and mirror recently came in! Fischer’s new dresser should be here in a couple of weeks, so at that time we can move his current one into the nursery and everything will really start coming together.

The last big purchases will be the rug and window treatments. I’ve decided to go with room darkening (curved) curtain rods this time along with blackout curtains. I’m also hoping to replace his blinds with these affordable woven shades! They’re the direction we want to go with pretty much all the window coverings in our house anyway, so why not start here!

I expect to have all the major items in place by the end of June – which is so exciting! During July, August and September I’ll be able to take my time putting finishing touches in and customizing it to perfection.

What do you think of the final design?!
